The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is warning of text message scammers posing as toll collectors in order to get residents to share personal financial information.
Text messages from “Pennsylvania Turnpike Toll Services” with urgent requests for payment on overdue balances and threats of additional charges are likely a scam, according to the commission.
The turnpike says customers have reported receiving the messages over the last three weeks, and similar scams have been reported in other states.
Residents who receive unsolicited texts and email from the turnpike should not click on the link. Drivers can check their account balance by visiting paturnpike.com and clicking “Pay a Bill.” The turnpike also has a toll pay app.
Fraudulent text messages can be reported to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov.
