Simone Biles leads the United States women into the gymnastics team final as part of an action-packed slate Tuesday at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Biles is in the lineup to compete in all four events of the team final despite a calf injury. The U.S. women will begin defense of their 2021 Olympic title in 3x3 basketball when the sport begins Tuesday. Katie Ledecky is back in the pool to compete in the women’s 1,500 freestyle, one of her signature events.

Northern Arizona’s players attack each drill, each sprint with vigor, the sounds of squeaking shoes and shouts of encouragement filling the thin mountain air. The final day of summer workouts, like the first or last day of fall camp, is filled with possibilities and enthusiasm. The Lumberjacks are not alone in their fervor for the upcoming season. Every team feels the same way before the ball officially goes in the air. Unlike some programs with misplaced hope, Northern Arizona has a reason for optimism. With a healthy roster and nearly everyone back from last year’s team, the Lumberjacks are fully expecting a run at a Big Sky championship.

Wisconsin’s first season with Air Raid disciple Phil Longo as offensive coordinator didn’t work out quite according to plan. The Badgers went 7-6 and posted their lowest scoring average in nearly two decades. The Badgers are optimistic about matching the success that Longo had in his previous stops now that they've had a year to adapt to his fast-paced system. Longo joined Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell's staff last season after coaching NFL quarterbacks Sam Howell and Drake Maye at North Carolina.

John Calipari wants his Arkansas Razorbacks to think big. The Hall of Fame coach is used to big thinking and expectations from his days at Kentucky, of course. Now, Calipari has constructed virtually a whole new Razorbacks roster since his hiring in April, with only forward Trevon Brazile returning after testing the NBA waters. He’s taking over a program that made it to back-to-back Elite Eights followed by a Sweet 16 trip last season. The outsized expectations were already there, but most of the roster was assembled by Calipari and his staff.

Steve McMichael always had a boisterous persona and a willingness to say whatever was on his mind, so it’s no stretch to think the Chicago Bears great’s Pro Football Hall of Fame induction speech would have been one to remember. His wife Misty says he would have “cut a scorcher.” McMichael is in the advanced stages of ALS and won’t be able to make the trip to Canton, Ohio, for his induction on Saturday. The 66-year-old McMichael is part of a seven-member class that includes former Bears Devin Hester and Julius Peppers. The two-time All-Pro defensive tackle played in a franchise-record 191 consecutive games from 1981 to 1993 and ranks second to Richard Dent on the Bears’ all-time sacks list with 92 1/2.

The entrance of name, image and likeness deals in college sports has raised questions about what it means to be a tax-exempt charitable organization. It's just one of many consequences of a Supreme Court decision in 2021 that allowed college players to get sponsorship deals or otherwise be compensated for endorsements. After the decision, some donors and fans set up nonprofits to facilitate NIL deals with players and successfully applied for tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service. But last June, the IRS advised that in most cases, paying players isn't a charitable cause. More than a year later, some nonprofit NIL continue to operate.
