While the late American sprinter Wilma Rudolph was running to three gold medals in the 1960 Rome Olympics, Nora Petrosky laid her plans to join her first bowling league.
On Sunday, 64 years later, as the Paris Olympics were getting underway, the Leola resident was inducted into the Lancaster United States Bowling Congress Association’s Hall of Fame for meritorious service to the sport.
More than 220 attendees at the LUSBCA annual awards banquet, held at the Eden Resort & Suites on Sunday, applauded the inductee and the many Lancaster County junior and adult bowler awardees.
LUSBCA director Neal Vital, who introduced Petrosky, said, “Nora loves helping young bowlers, which she did during her coaching time with the Lancaster McCaskey bowling team.”
Vital is also a LUSBCA and Pennsylvania State Hall of Fame member.
Petrosky’s interest in the sport began with her parents, Melvin and Kathryn Hoekstra.
“I watched bowlers like Dick Weber on TV with my father and was encouraged to join league competition by my parents,” she said.
Petrosky, 75, has held “every league office through the years” and currently, is a LUSBCA board member.
With a high game of 290 and a high series of 689, Petrosky continues to compete in the Mixed Nuts and Leisure Lanes Thursday Senior leagues, notching a “steady” 175 average.
The Lancaster 600-club member said she has enjoyed meeting lifelong friends in the sport and is “honored to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.”
She was in attendance with her husband, Pete, and a dozen supportive family members.
“We honor our Hall of Fame inductee and the many adult and junior bowlers tonight,” LUSBCA director Brian Hess said.
After awarding a series of tournament winners, the season’s county high score champs were recognized.
Ryan Graham earned the high average (239), and Kerry Smith notched her 13th high average title with a 237. Ashley Sham rolled the top women’s series (815), while Robert Bryan and Jason Defragesco tied with a high series of 867.
The Kathryn Shultz Most Improved Average was earned by Bethany Kennedy, who increased by 37 pins; and Thomas Hammerstone won the Thomas Long award for an improvement of 40 pins.
Hess said that this season there were a 120 perfect games and 54 800 series rolled.
