FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A year after his storybook Inter Miami debut in the inaugural Leagues Cup, Lionel Messi was unable to play Saturday night as his teammates began defense of their trophy with a 2-0 home win against Mexican team Puebla in the 2024 tournament opener.

Gotham FC has signed 13-year-old McKenna “Mak” Whitham to a multi-year contract through 2028. The guaranteed deal makes the U.S. Youth National Team forward the youngest contracted player in the NWSL. Defending champion Gotham said it signed Whitham via the NWSL’s U-18 entry mechanism. The contract will be effective Jan. 1. In addition, the club is also signing Whitham to a National Team Replacement contract, which will allow her to be available for selection in upcoming matches during the international window. The California native will turn 14 on Saturday.

The MLS expansion San Diego FC have signed Northern Ireland international Patrick “Paddy” McNair to a three-year contract with a club option for a fourth year. The defender joins San Diego FC as a free agent after the completion of his contract with Middlesbrough in June. SDFC reached an agreement with West Bromwich Albion F.C. of the English Championship to loan McNair for the remainder of 2024. McNair will occupy an international roster spot and join SDFC in January pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa. San Diego FC will begin play in February.

Inter Miami star Lionel Messi won’t play in the MLS All-Star Game while nursing an ankle injury. Messi left the July 14 Copa America final win over Colombia with a right ankle injury. His teammate, Luis Suárez, also won’t play in the game Wednesday in Columbus, Ohio, with what the team described as “knee discomfort.” Both were listed among the unavailable players by the league on Monday.
