Two female boxers at the Paris Olympics were disqualified at the 2023 world championships after being judged to fail gender eligibility tests. The International Olympic Committee says the women have complied with all rules to fight at the games. Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan and Imane Khelif of Algeria are competing at their second Summer Games. Both finished outside the medals at the Tokyo Olympics held in 2021. Both were removed from their competitions in New Delhi last year. The world championships are run by the International Boxing Association which was banished from Olympic boxing by the IOC before Tokyo.

Just 12 years after women's boxing was added to the Olympic program, the sport is still growing rapidly. In Paris, half of the boxers in the field will be women for the first time. They will compete in a record six weight classes, which created opportunities for fighters like Britain's Charley Davison to extend their Olympic careers. Many of the fighters competing in Paris watched the first women's boxing tournament from London as girls, and they were hooked on the sport. Women's boxing has also proliferated as a professional sport, with hundreds of fighters now making a career out of an often-discounted sport.

Olympic boxing in Paris will see big changes to the sport's traditional structure. Give or take a few last-minute additions or dropouts, half of the 248 boxers in Paris will be women. That's a milestone justly heralded across the sport, but the Olympics got there by sharply cutting the number of male boxers to make an overall field that will be the smallest in Olympic boxing since 1956. While there will be 23 more women fighting in Paris than in Tokyo three years ago, there will also be 63 fewer men fighting in only seven weight classes. That's the fewest since 1908.

More than 50 amateur boxers will hit the ring Saturday night for the first fights of the 2024 Eastern Pennsylvania Golden Gloves tournament.

The young boxers from Lancaster who hit Independence, Missouri, last weekend for the 2024 National Silver Gloves tournament have returned triumphant — sporting two golds, three silvers and two bronzes.
