Penn Manor School District’s board plans to discuss retaining religious liberties law firm Independence Law Center at its Aug. 5 meeting – less than two months after first voting down a potential contract with the firm.
School board member Matt Beakes asked that ILC go on the Aug. 5 meeting agenda toward the end of Monday’s meeting. Beakes was one of five on the nine-member board who voted against considering a contract with the firm at the board’s June 18 meeting.
Agreement on proceeding with the ILC at the board’s Aug. 5 meeting would prompt a vote at its Aug. 19 meeting to retain the firm as special counsel at no cost, or pro bono, district spokesperson Brian Wallace confirmed Tuesday.
Both meetings will be held at 7 p.m. in the large group instruction rooms at Penn Manor High School on 100 E. Cottage Ave. in Millersville.
ILC is a Harrisburg-based firm that has worked generally with Republican-dominated school boards to craft policies on student access to library books and rules for transgender students’ use of restrooms and locker rooms.
