The Native American Longhouse at the 1719 Museum complex in Willow Street is one of the 55 items on a new Susquehanna National Heritage Area "bucket list" of things to see, explore and eat in Lancaster and York counties.

Have you ever eaten a Washington Boro Jet Star tomato? Taken in a show at Lancaster's Fulton Theatre? Ridden the Strasburg Rail Road? Attended a baseball game at Clipper Magazine Stadium?

If you’ve done some of these things, you’ve already checked off a few items on a new “bucket list” that has been assembled by the Susquehanna National Heritage Area.

The list includes 55 ideas for things to see, explore and taste in Lancaster and York counties — which make up the heritage area. The Susquehanna Heritage Area is the 55th such area designated in America.

The bucket list is an updated and expanded version of previous lists assembled by the heritage area in 2020 and 2021.

Jet Star tomatoes are among the local varieties grown in Washington Boro and available at the Tomato Barn and the annual Tomato Festival.

The nonprofit that represents the heritage area is asking that those checking off bucket list items snap photos of their adventures, post them to social media and tag @SusqNHA. After completing, posting and tagging five items, you’ll be eligible to receive a Susquehanna National Heritage Area sticker.

Lancaster County bucket list items include learning about the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority’s wind turbines at Turkey Hill Overlook south of Washington Boro, driving through a covered bridge, checking out medical and local history at the Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum or Historic Rock Ford in Lancaster and learning about Native American history at the Longhouse on the grounds of the 1719 Museum in Willow Street.

Driving through a Lancaster County covered bridge, such as the Pinetown bridge over the Conestoga River is an item on a "bucket list" from the Susquehanna National Heritage Area.

Other items include climbing the silo observation tower during a Kreider Farm Tour south of Manheim, visiting Ephrata’s Veterans Plaza on the Warwick to Ephrata Rail Trail and taking a tour of James Buchanan’s Wheatland, Lancaster, or the National Watch and Clock Museum in Columbia.

Food from Kitchen Kettle Village, Intercourse, and Lancaster Central Market, and beverages from local breweries or distilleries, are also on the list.

York County bucket list items include the York State Fair, the Burning of the Bridge Diorama in Wrightsville, the Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York and William H. Kain County Park near Jacobus.

The final item on the bucket list is getting your National Park Service passport stamped at the heritage area’s visitor centers in both counties: the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, and the Zimmerman Center for Heritage at 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville.
