Franklin & Marshall College President Barbara Altmann will take on a statewide role as the 2024-25 board chair of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania.
The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania works to advance and advocate for affordable, accessible, and independent higher education. It is the only statewide organization in Pennsylvania that exclusively serves the interest of private higher education, according to Millersville University’s nonprofit directory.
While remaining at the helm of F&M, a private college in Lancaster city with nearly 2,000 students, she will oversee the association of 85 independent nonprofit colleges and universities. In Lancaster County, F&M and Elizabethtown College belong to the association.
Altmann currently serves as the board’s vice chair. Her new role as chair begins in September.
Altmann also serves on the board of trustees of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, a national nonprofit based in Washington, D.C.
Locally, Altmann serves on the boards of the Lancaster STEM Alliance and EDC Lancaster County.
The association’s colleges and universities contribute $24 billion annually to the state economy, 38%, or nearly 181,000, of all four-year degree-seeking students in Pennsylvania, according to the association’s announcement earlier this week.
