Steve Massini, Penn State Health CEO of five years, will retire Oct. 1.
A part of the hospital system since 2015, when he joined as chief financial officer of Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Massini has seen the organization through the creation of a new Lancaster County hospital and multiple acquisitions and integrations, Penn State Health said.
In addition to the development of a combined 18 Penn State Health Medical Group practices across Lancaster and nearby counties, Massini’s tenure at the system saw the creation of Lancaster Medical Center, Penn State Health said.
Plans for the leadership transition will be announced in the coming weeks, Penn State Health President Neeli Bendapudi said.
“Steve has provided calm and steady leadership during a period of great change in the health care landscape of Pennsylvania and the industry overall,” Penn State Health Board Chair and Emeritus Penn State University Trustee Keith Masser said. “In the face of challenges ranging from the COVID-19 pandemic to increased market consolidation, he always stayed focused on meeting the needs of the community.”
Massini’s compensation in 2022 was $1.66 million, according to the health system’s IRS Form 990 for that tax year.
Massini has served on the boards of organizations such as the United Way of the Capital Region, the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania and Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC.
Massini’s retirement will include spending time with his four grandchildren, and fishing off the coast of Sea Isle City, New Jersey, Penn State Health said.
“I am incredibly grateful and blessed to have had the opportunity to serve Penn State Health and Penn State University, especially in my role as CEO,” Massini said. “Over 40 years ago when I met my wife at the first day of orientation at the Penn State Dubois campus, I could never have imagined the opportunities—both professionally and personally—that being part of the Penn State family would provide.”
Penn State Health has increased its presence in Lancaster County’s health care market in recent years.
Its most notable move has been the addition of the county’s newest hospital in East Hempfield Township. The $375 million, 142-bed Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center opened in October 2022 at 2160 State Road in East Hempfield Township.
A few months earlier in June 2022, it opened Penn State Health Children’s Pediatric Center at 1430 Harrisburg Pike in Manheim Township after spending more than $11 million renovating the former Toys R Us store that once occupied the space.
In 2019, it opened the Penn State Health Lime Spring Outpatient Center at 2221 Noll Drive in East Hempfield Township. The center consolidated five of the health system’s medical group practices and added several specialty services.
The health system made its first splash here in 2017 by acquiring the county’s largest group of independent physicians, Physicians’ Alliance Ltd., which represented about 100 physicians, advanced practice clinicians and registered dieticians at 12 practice locations in Lancaster, Dauphin and York counties. At the time, it reported serving about 100,000 patients.
