A growing number of women say they’ve tried to end their pregnancies on their own by doing things like taking herbs, drinking alcohol or even hitting themselves in the belly, a new study suggests. Researchers surveyed reproductive-age women in the U.S. before and after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022. The proportion who reported trying to end pregnancies by themselves rose from 2.4% to 3.3%. The study was published Tuesday in the journal JAMA Network Open. Study authors acknowledged that the increase is small but said it’s telling.

Iowa now bans most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy and before many women know they are pregnant. The law went into effect Monday in Iowa. It's one of four states that ban abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, with near-total bans at all stages of pregnancy in 14 others. Iowa’s Republican leaders have long fought for a ban and gained momentum after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. Providers have shored up access in neighboring states and learned from others where bans went into effect more swiftly.

Minnesota medical providers and public officials are preparing for the arrival of new patients before an Iowa law banning most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy goes into effect. The new restrictions in Iowa take effect Monday. Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan toured an abortion clinic this week and welcomed people traveling from other states seeking care. Minnesota providers say they expect to see an increase in patient demand after Iowa’s restrictions take effect. The Iowa Supreme Court reiterated in June that there is no constitutional right to an abortion in the state and ordered a hold on the law to be lifted.

Iowa’s strict abortion law will take effect Monday, banning most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy and before many women know they are pregnant. The law was passed last year, but a judge had blocked it from being enforced. When the Iowa Supreme Court reiterated in June that there's no constitutional right to an abortion in the state, they ordered the hold be lifted. The district court judge’s orders Monday say the law will go into effect next Monday. Currently, 14 states have near total bans on abortion at all stages of pregnancy and three states ban it after about six weeks. Iowa abortion providers have said they will continue to provide services in compliance with the law.

Restaurant critics appear to have the best job in journalism, enjoying meals a few nights a week on someone else’s dime. But New York Times restaurant critic Pete Wells is painting a more complicated picture. In a recent column, Wells announced he’s leaving the beat because the constant eating has led to obesity and other health problems. To write a review, critics usually make two or three visits to a restaurant so they can taste as many dishes as possible. And restaurant food tends to contain higher than ideal levels of salt and saturated fat, according to a 2020 study by Tufts University.

The Israeli army says it has struck several Houthi targets in western Yemen following a fatal drone attack by the rebel group in Tel Aviv the previous day. Saturday's strikes appeared to be the first by Israel on Yemeni soil since the Israel-Hamas war began in October. The Israeli army says a number of “military targets” were hit in the port city of Hodeidah, a Houthi stronghold. The army adds that its attack was in response to “hundreds of attacks” against Israel in recent months. A Houthi spokesman says the “blatant Israeli aggression” targeted fuel storage facilities and the province’s power station.
