Officials say Meta has agreed to a $1.4 billion settlement with Texas in a privacy lawsuit over allegations that the tech giant used biometric data of users without their permission. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said Tuesday that the settlement is the largest secured by a single state. A judge in 2021 approved a $650 million settlement with the company, formerly known as Facebook, over similar allegations of users in Illinois. Meta says in a statement that the company is pleased to resolve the matter. The Texas lawsuit said that Meta was in violation of a state laws that prohibits capturing or selling a resident’s biometric information, such as their face or fingerprint, without their consent.

Houston area residents are remembering longtime U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas as an advocate for human rights and for her community. On Monday, residents, constituents and others paid their respects to the longtime lawmaker as she lay in state in the rotunda of Houston’s City Hall. Jackson Lee was 74 when she died on July 19. She had been treated for pancreatic cancer. During her career, she helped lead federal efforts to protect women from domestic violence and recognize Juneteenth as a national holiday. The Democrat had represented her Houston-based district and the nation’s fourth-largest city since 1995. President Joe Biden stopped in Houston Monday evening and paid his respects.
No longer on the campaign trail, President Joe Biden delivered a speech at the LBJ Presidential Library designed to help cement his legacy. Slightly more than a week after dropping out of this year’s election, Biden on Monday marked the 60th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act by speaking out for the rule of law and democratic principles. All the while, he warned about the threat he sees if Republican Donald Trump returns to the White House. Biden followed his denunciations of Trump with a mix of nostalgia for his early days in politics during the era of Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Baines Johnson.
Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has pardoned three journalists who were charged with sex crimes and espionage in prosecutions widely condemned by press freedom advocates as retaliation for critical reporting. Omar Radi, Taoufik Bouachrine and Soulaimane Raissouni were among 2,278 people who received pardons this week, according to Morocco’s Ministry of Justice. The pardons were announced Monday as Morocco celebrated Throne Day, marking the anniversary of Mohammed VI taking the throne. The journalists have become emblematic of Morocco’s aggressive efforts to stifle criticism from news media and human rights activists. Civil liberties advocates have long condemned the prosecutions as politically motivated.

What do Venezuelans believe in? The government has not published official data for years, but academics rely on projections and field work to have a sense of the religious landscape. Religion may not have a direct impact on the July 28 election, when President Nicolas Maduro might be re-elected for a six-year term. But religiosity has played a role in the past few decades, especially during his predecessor's government. Religious groups say they generally enjoy freedom of religion or belief so long as they refrained from criticizing Maduro-aligned figures or policies.
