Harriet W. Maurer, 86 formerly of Lancaster passed away Friday evening, December 15, 2023 at Avalon Assisted Living, McLean, Virginia. Harriet was born in Conestoga on December 13, 1937, daughter of the late G. Melvin and R. Alma Foutz Warfel. She was the wife of David H. Maurer, who preceded her in death on September 14, 2007.
Harriet most recently lived at Woodcrest Villa, Lancaster where she participated in many activities there. Harriet graduated from Manor Joint High School (Penn Manor) in 1955. She worked for many years as an executive secretary for Woodstream Corporation, Lititz. Earlier in life, she worked for Hamilton Watch and Armstrong.
Harriet was a lifelong member of Bethel EC Church in Conestoga, where she served as Sunday School treasurer, member of the Home Group Committee, Ministry Council, Lay Delegate to the E.C. National Conference, Assistant Lay Delegate, Pastoral Relations Committee and Ladies Group Leader. Most recently she was attending Grace Community Church in Willow Street. She was past president of Rohrerstown Fire Company Auxiliary, member and former officer of the Towne Club of Lancaster and founder and Queen Mother of the Red Rebels Red Hat Group. Harriet also served 10 years as a friendly visitor for Office of Aging.
Harriet enjoyed going to Ocean City, NJ, antiques, crossword puzzles, Penn State football and card games. She enjoyed traveling and was able to visit all 50 states with Hawaii being the last visited, being able to do so with her family. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, which she adored.
Harriet will be missed by her daughter, Phyllis Farmer Thompson, wife of Dr. Curtis Thompson of Arlington, VA; stepdaughters, Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Dewhurst of Beaver Falls and Laura Feola of Royersford. Harriet is also survived by her grandchildren, Rev. Dr. Rachel Thompson Orfield, wife of Noah of Nashville, Nathan Thompson of Arlington, VA, Benjamin Dewhurst of Carlisle, Matthew Dewhurst of Philadelphia and Hannah Dewhurst of Pittsburgh and her cousin Darwin Warfel Eshleman and family of Lancaster.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend Harriet's memorial service on Friday, December 22, 2023 at 1 PM from the Eagle Commons of Woodcrest Villa, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. Friends will be greeted after the service during the reception. Private family interment will be held in the Millersville Mennonite Cemetery.
