Sarah Butler

Sarah Butler, caddie for Sarah Kemp in the U.S. Women's Open at Lancaster Country Club

Sarah Kemp and Sarah Butler help each other out.

Like on the 16th hole at the U.S. Women’s Open on Sunday at Lancaster Country Club, after Kemp hit her ball on the green from a front bunker. While Butler raked the trap, Kemp took on a role mostly for caddies, pulling the pin. Kemp then carried it to the front of the green and placed it next to her bag; Butler took it from there.

Butler was one of the handful of women caddies at this year’s Open. It’s the fourth season for the 40-year old from Minnesota, and her second with Kemp.

“I was available; she was available. And we ended up together,” Butler said of the pairing.

Kemp was not in the running for a title Sunday, but had obviously made the cut — something some bigger names weren’t able to do. With Butler’s help, Kemp shot even-par Sunday to finish at 9-over for the tournament, tied for 29th.

“We had a really good start; we were 3-under through four,” said Butler. “I felt like it might be a little more gettable today. We struggled with some putts coming in, a couple three-putts on 13, 14 and missed a close one on 16.”

Kemp did make par on 16, a drivable 232-yard par-4.

As with most player-caddie relationships, the two are able to work together well.

“We act as a team and try to make the best decisions we can together,” said Butler. “Certainly, there’s times when we might see it differently, but after time, you get to know each other and I know her different tendencies.

“I think we’ve been a really good team and we try to have a good time out there.”

Butler echoed the thoughts of most in attendance about a wonderful week at LCC.

“It’s been amazing,” Butler said. “Lancaster has honestly gotten better each time we’ve seen it, I think. It’s a really good test. It tests all parts of your game, from tee to green.

“I mean, honestly, I thought it got better every round. It was a special week.”
