When: Earl Township supervisors meeting, July 18.

What happened: Supervisors signed an agreement with Noble Environmental to move the township waste and recyclable services to ESC Management Services LLC, Lancaster, an affiliate of Good’s Disposal Services, Ephrata.

Background: By phone July 23, Don Neukam, general manager of Good’s, said Noble wanted to keep its business closer to its home base in Pittsburgh. The township entered into a three-year trash and recycling contract with Noble on March 7, 2022, which Good’s will honor.

Cost: There will be no changes to the residents’ costs for trash removal. For the 2024-25 year, the contract specifies residents will pay $85 per quarter and $340 for the year.

Also: Residents have the option to choose another hauler with proof of service provided to the township, township secretary/treasurer Amanda Martin said after the meeting.

Fire company: Roger Stauffer, chief of Martindale Volunteer Fire Company, and Brandon Brubaker, president, visited the meeting to thank supervisors for their support, provide an update and discuss any concerns of the supervisors.

Details: Brubaker said there is a need for a new fire engine in five years with a price tag of over $1 million. Equipment costs, he said, continue to increase every year.

Funding: The company received $42,000 from the 2023 fund drive and relies on monthly events to raise about $2,000. The fundraising covers operating costs.

More: There are 30 active firefighters. Supervisor Bob Winegardner complimented the fire company for being “over the top” for how well it’s run and supports itself.

Quotable: “We aren’t here to request more funding but believe in relationships and how we can best support the township,” Stauffer said.

Streambank project: Supervisors approved $14,000 to be paid to Spring Hill Partners, Lebanon, for engineering costs toward flood plain restoration at the John Martin Farm, 303 Mill Road. The township will be responsible for removing and installing culvert pipe work for the project at a cost of $8,000, which doesn’t include labor.

HVAC system: Supervisors approved cost of $16,253.63 for Vertex Mechanical Inc., Stevens, to rebuild the township administration building HVAC system.

Next meetings: Supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, and at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15.
