A Lancaster restaurant was ranked as one of the best Peruvian restaurants in the United States in a new Yelp listing.
Local South-American restaurant Chellas Arepa Kitchen ranked No. 2 on Yelp.com’s listing of “Top 25 Peruvian restaurants where Yelpers satisfy their cravings.”
Currently located based out of a wooden trailer on 1830 Hempstead Road in Lancaster, Chellas serves gluten-free Peruvian and Venezuelan cuisine and is renowned for their arepas and lomo saltado.
The business is set to open its first brick-and-mortar location at 325 N. Queen St., a space occupied by Cabalar Meat Co. since 2018.
A Los Angeles restaurant, Mex Peru Gipsy, topped the Yelp list.
Chellas — which ranks among businesses in major cities like New Orleans and Austin, Texas — is one of two Pennsylvania restaurants on the listing. Geronimo’s in Ambler, Montgomery County, was ranked No. 25.
Yelp created the listing by identifying businesses in the “Peruvian” category and ranking those spots using a number of factors, including the total volume of and ratings of reviews. Yelp included just one or two restaurants per state “for geographic diversity,” according to an explanation of its methodology that accompanied the listing.
The restaurant previously ranked number 44 on Yelp’s “America’s Top 100 Places to Eat” list in 2020. As of July 29, Chellas has a five-star rating on Yelp with 388 reviews.
