Zina Redcay - Rt 30

Traffic on Rt. 30 flows past the intersection with Singer Avenue, in Paradise Township, Friday, Feb. 17, 2023.

Safety improvements are set to begin next week along a section of Route 30 (Lincoln Highway East) in Paradise, Leacock and East Lampeter townships with a history of crashes.

Upgrades to the 9.1-mile section of Route 30 between routes 772 and 896 are expected to take 15 months to complete.

Starting April 8, work will take place between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., weather permitting. Short term traffic shifts and lane closures will be required. The state Department of Transportation did not respond to a request for the exact location of the lane closures, or how long they are needed.

The project includes upgrades to seven intersections, a new traffic signal at Singer Avenue and Lincoln Highway East, and new “signal ahead” flashing warning devices at four other intersections aimed at reducing rear-end crashes. The road will also be repaved.

Between 2018 and 2022, the PennDOT reported 439 wrecks along the section of road – an average of seven per month. Seven were fatal, and another 22 caused serious injuries. An average of 16,000 vehicles use the road per day.

Multiple neighbors of the Singer Avenue intersection told LNP | LancasterOnline last year that vehicles have hit their homes during crashes.

The $7.6 million project is scheduled for completion in July 2025. The contractor is Allan Myers of Worcester Township, Montgomery County.
